Have you ever heard of “the Scrum”? It is a little mini-game within the greater game of rugby. Each member of the scrum has different roles to accomplish their unified goal of getting the ball to his or her team. Possession is vital in team sports and rugby is no exception. This is the entire purpose of the scrum: to get the ball to a teammate (possession) in order to move forward. To do so, you must push your way forward against an opposing team of people with the exact same goal. It is a vicious struggle that requires the entire team striving for that one goal.
We all have different roles in our lives, orbiting circles that create a chaotic and busy, yet fulfilling life. We find unity in our common purpose to help youth athletes become more through sports. We are focused on the entire athlete: their athletic competencies, character development, life journey, and leadership abilities.
We have all been at the point where we decided to struggle alongside a team and/or a single athlete in order to move them forward. It’s a commitment to join together, lock arms, and figure out life together. Here is where I want to struggle alongside of you. I want to give resources, ideas, inspiration, and encouragement to coaches who are in the thick of it. I want to stand out against the issues we see in youth sports and help young athletes become more. I want to be a good coach who is committed to serving the athletes instead of their own agenda or goals. A coach whose focus is on developing people and maybe collecting a few trophies along the way. A coach who wants the best for each person they instruct both on and off the field.
If these echo your thoughts, then you belong on this team.
